Shanghai 1926

the old men shared a pipe

it was fluted and the fluting packed with opium

it crackled into life

and the smoke rose to some strange destiny

the thin pursed lips of the men shared the pipe

and so in the partaking of it

waited for the fragrance

to wind into their minds and insulate them from every sharp care or grief

which kept them as of bondage to this earth

they came to believe they were litigants before a wise judge

who would dismiss all their cares as being merely contingent on the human condition itself

the minds of the opium smokers were now free to roam

like Prometheus unbound

the old men they shared the pipe
