warily as if familiar with every aperture
of the views of men
he waited for the man so arranged in the court
to say something of moment
he did not have long to wait
a pilot light of truth flickered into life
as the words of the witness slapped the straight silver glassy sea
like a crisp gunshot
like a wave in autumn cracks at the edge of the earth
some portentous thing even in the eyes of the judge
he repaired to his chambers
and applied the precepts of the law
later he instructed the jury to weigh the evidence
but betrayed no prejudice
and kept his own counsel
